Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) SFPs let you run multiple independent signals over a single fibre pair by transmitting each on its own wavelength, or colour. For Australian networks facing fibre scarcity or high leasing costs on metro and long-haul links, DWDM optics can multiply capacity without laying new fibre. How DWDM SFPs work

A standard grey SFP or SFP+ transmits on a fixed wavelength, usually 1310nm or 1550nm. A DWDM SFP instead transmits on one of many precise ITU-T grid wavelengths in the C-band, spaced 100GHz or 50GHz apart. By pairing a DWDM SFP at each end with a passive multiplexer, you can combine up to 40, 80, or more independent channels onto a single fibre pair.

When to use DWDM optics

DWDM SFPs suit metro ring builds, data centre interconnect (DCI) between sites, and long-haul backbone links where fibre is limited or expensive to lease. They are especially valuable for organisations extending connectivity between campuses, data centres, or disaster recovery sites without paying for additional dark fibre.

Key selection criteria

When specifying DWDM SFPs, confirm the ITU-T channel (wavelength), reach (typically 40km, 80km, or 120km+ with amplification), form factor (SFP+ 10G is most common, though 25G and 100G DWDM optics are increasingly available), and whether you need tunable DWDM optics that can be reconfigured to any channel versus fixed-wavelength modules. Pairing with a mux/demux

DWDM SFPs need a passive coloured multiplexer (mux/demux) at each site to combine and split wavelengths onto the shared fibre. Confirm your mux supports the channel spacing and count you need, with room to add channels as capacity demands grow.

Like standard SFPs, DWDM modules are built to MSA standards and can be sourced as vendor-compatible optics for Cisco, Juniper, Arista and other platforms, avoiding OEM pricing while maintaining full digital diagnostics (DDM) support.
